RASA, (meaning : essence in arts, music created by one’s state of mind) the series I’ve been working on for the last one year is inspired by my land, India. The colours of white (Sattva – purity), red (Rajas – passion) and black (Tamas – intertia) represent the evolution of human consciousness or energy. The ‘trigunas’ as they are refered to.

Whether it’s the colours, ink or pigments extracted from rock minerals, materials like silk or mud for murals, use of copper and silver or symbol patterns, Indian folk art carries stories of history, culture and the social narrative from east to west and north to south.

We all carry impressions of childhood within and return to where we belong. Painting this series has been one of self discovery, to understand better and harmonize the state of mind. For me RASA is raw, it’s shades of earth and clay, layered in conflicting thoughts painted in black. It’s a strange amalgamation of my initial Japanese inspired forms and the heritage I belong to. Both keep me as intrigued as ever and here’s a peak into my thoughts..
